Open play rewards what you're already good at — so the one shot gating your next level never gets the reps.

How it works

Two questions, not one: what's broken, and why it never fixed itself.

01The skill

Which of the four skills that gate 4.0 to work on first.

Each skill is scored from your answers and weighted by how much it matters at 4.0. The largest gap is where the plan starts.

How your priority is chosen

Each skill's level comes from your answers, 0 to 3. The gap is how far below 3 it sits, multiplied by how much that skill separates 3.5 from 4.0. The largest result is where your plan starts.

Priority = weight × (3 − level)

  • The reset×1.4 × (3 − 1) = 2.8
  • Soft-game patience×0.9 × (3 − 1) = 1.8
  • Third-shot drop×1.2 × (3 − 2) = 1.2
  • Hands at the net×1.0 × (3 − 2) = 1.0
02The root cause

And why that skill hasn't developed, given how you train.

Three answers describe how you practice. A player who mostly plays games needs a different plan from one who drills but can't carry it into matches.

How you practiceExample assessment — illustrative answers
  • Court time· settles it

    Mostly games, occasional drilling

    No isolated reps
  • Drill quality

I drill specific shots, but I pick them randomly

    Reps without a plan
  • Who you play

Mostly stuck with my usual group, no real drilling partner

    No isolated reps

Root cause

Games don't teach the reset.

Three weeks of low-stakes resets is the plan.

03The reading

One number you can re-test against, instead of a vibe.

Both answers roll up into a readiness score for 4.0. Re-test after the plan and you see how far it moved.

63 is your baseline from these answers. The plan starts on resets from the transition zone, and the re-test in three weeks shows what moved.

The plan

Three weeks, one skill, and a number at the end of it.

  • A plan built on one skill

A sequence aimed at the single constraint — not a library to browse.

  • Named drills, with visual demos

Every session names the drill and shows the shot.

  • Sessions you log as you go

Each drill records makes out of attempts, so your practice has a history — kept beside the plan, separate from the re-test.

  • An in-game rule for the week

One constraint to carry into open play.

Reset Ladder

Drop-feed yourself off the bounce from mid-court and reset into a target zone near the kitchen line. Work in sets of 10 and keep the count. When the timer ends, stop where you are and log how many of your last 10 landed in the zone.

When the timer ends

Log your last set of 10. A reset counts if it lands in your target zone by the kitchen line and stays below net height.

Practice target 7 of 10

The match re-test target is a separate number, on your plan.

Re-testing

Re-test after three weeks. See what changed.

Answer the same twelve questions again and see how your score moved. The next gap becomes the next plan.
